Madwomen in the Attic has been offering writing and community-making gatherings and workshops since its inception in Spring 2017. The shape of these gatherings and workshops have shifted over time: they started as small-scale, local in-person gatherings in the Buffalo area between 2017 and 2020, and during the 2020 pandemic, they underwent their first transformation into online community forums and gatherings. By 2021, Madwomen in the Attic forged a working partnership with Herstory Writers Network, launching a free-to-the-public weekly online co-facilitated workshop, “Memoirs to (Re)Imagine Mental Healthcare,” led by Jessica Lowell Mason (MITA) and Janelle Gagnon (Herstory) that lasted four years until its conclusion in the spring of 2025. After this, in late spring and summer of 2025, MITA’s community members and former members of the workshop formed the Mad Writing Collective, a collective of writers and thinkers dedicated to sharing space and wisdom with each other through volunteer workshops and other online community gathering formations.
